ELL Graduation

Tonight was the graduation for this semester’s English Language Learners. Last spring we began a new tradition; at the end of each semester, we give all the students an opportunity to give a short speech as part of our closing ceremony. This allows the students to build confidence and to demonstrate the skills they have learned. Tonight, students came prepared to answer the question “Who am I?” I learned a lot about my students.

A few students shared some of the differences they’ve found between the United States and their home country. Others introduced their families to us. Some shared stories about how long they’ve been in the U.S. and what they do here. Others told funny stories. A couple students shared the influence of their faith on their lives. One student who is a doctor even shared some of her medical knowledge with us!

The recurring theme throughout the presentations was that the students are so grateful for our ELL program. Just to be clear, the purpose of these speeches isn’t for the students to tell us what a wonderful job we’ve done. However, it is nice to hear how the ministry of ELL has positively impacted their lives. More than one student mentioned that when they first came to America they had no friends, but the ELL program helped them meet other people who were in the same situation. At the same time, the ELL program helped them develop their English language skills so they would be more confident establishing other relationships.

This was also a sad graduation because I have to say good-bye to some of my students. Sandy and Bumsoo (pictured above) will be returning to South Korea in June. Shou-fen (pictured to the right) and Darrin will be returning to Taiwan after Darrin graduates with me from NTS in May.
