This is not a holiday we often celebrate in the United States. In fact, most Americans have never heard of this centuries-old Christian holiday in which we celebrate the life of Nicholas. It is on this day in the year 343, that Bishop Nicholas of Myra died.
With the increasing commercialization of Christmas in the past few decades, we equate Saint Nicholas with Santa Claus, and associate him with reindeer and elves. We forget about the historical Christian bishop that served in what is modern-day Turkey.
Visit the Saint Nicholas Center to learn more about the historical Saint Nicholas, how the traditions of Santa Claus are loosely based on his life, and how to celebrate the life of this godly man with Christians around the world.
