Since we have these words engraved on most communion tables, we assume Jesus means that we are to observe the Lord’s supper as he has instituted it.
But let’s look at what he says.
Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”What is being done here? Bread is being broken. A body is being given. The disciples are told to do this in remembrance of him. The disciples are called to be broken, to give their own bodies, not for their own glory or fame, but out of remembrance of their Lord.
When we partake in the Lord’s supper this evening, let us not simply receive the bread and the cup in remembrance of him, but let us allow ourselves to be broken the way he was broken. Let us give of ourselves in the way He gave of himself. Let this meal be a reminder of this calling.
This video illustrates how we are to be broken and give of ourselves.
