Orlando Vacation: Day-By-Day

After I fulfilled my responsibilities for the SDMI General Convention, I spent a week of vacation in Orlando with my good friend Joe Heath. Here's are brief daily highlights from my vacation.

Monday 6/29
On Monday morning, I participated in a forum with other Mission Corps participants. We shared insights and suggestions to improve the Mission Corps program in the Church of the Nazarene. It was great to interact with people who have served in many different contexts.

Tuesday 6/30
On Tuesday, I joined some others in touring the visitor center at the world headquarters for Wycliffe Bible Translators. We saw how languages change over time, how languages are grouped in families, and how Wycliffe Bible Translators is striving to have a translation of the Bible (at least in progress) by the year 2025 for every language group. After touring Wycliffe, we toured the Campus Crusade for Christ headquarters, where they distribute the Jesus Film. They demonstrated how Wycliffe translates the film into different languages, then native speakers record the audio in that language. They even showed how they make the audio fit the mouth movements of the original film so it appears that the actors are speaking each language.

Wednesday 7/1
On Wednesday, I returned to the Convention Center to sit in on some of the business sessions. The highlight was the Election of Eugenio Duarte, from Cape Verde, as the first General Superintendent from outside North America.
Thursday 7/2
We returned Thursday evening for the installation service for new General Superintendents:
  • Eugenio Duarte, from Cape Verde.
  • David Graves, the former director of Sunday School Ministries (now SDMI), who now pastors College Church of the Nazarene in Olathe, KS.
  • Stan Toler, pastor of Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Oklahoma City.
Friday 7/3 - Saturday 7/4
On Friday and Saturday, Joe and I went to the Kennedy Space Center and Astronaut Hall of Fame. There is so much to see and do that one day is not nearly enough. (Good thing tickets are valid for 2 days!) We viewed IMAX movies about the space program, learned about the early days of space exploration, and looked ahead to what the future holds for the space program after the retirement of the space shuttles. Click here to view the pictures I took at KSC and Wycliffe.

Sunday 7/5
On Sunday I attended Joe's church, Center Pointe Church of the Nazarene in Orlando. I got to reconnect with Dan & Margarette Mann, who I met in 2001 when they were serving as NIVS missionaries in Bulgaria in 2001 when I visited.

Monday 7/6
Flew back to Kansas City.
