Romanian Christmas Carols

In Romania, it is not uncommon for school children to learn English lyrics to Christmas songs. Most everyone knows "Jingle Bells" in English, even if they don't speak English. When listening to the radio, Christmas songs are often imported from America - in tact with their English lyrics.

In church we often sing Christmas songs which have been translated from English and other languages - like O Come All Ye Faithful (from Latin), Silent Night (from German), and Angels We Have Heard on High (from French).

But there is something about singing Christmas songs that are part of the Romanian culture, which have their origin in Romania, not from other parts of the world. Here are a few of the most common traditional Romanian Christmas carols.

"O Ce Veste Minunata!" ("O, What Wonderful News!" - Click here for lyrics in English) sung by the Sighișoara Gospel Choir at the Saint Nicholas Fair.

"Astazi s-a nascut Hristos" ("Today Christ is Born") sung by the children in the Sighișoara Church of the Nazarene during their Christmas program.

"Steaua sus rasare" sung by the children in the village of Viscri.

"Trei pastori se intalnira" sung by the men in the Țigmandru Church

I didn't get them on video this year, but maybe next year I'll capture 2 other favorites "Colinda, Colinda, Colinda," and "Domn Domn sa-naltam."
