The Call to Discipleship

The focus of my ministry in Romania is to train lay leaders in the Church of the Nazarene and help them develop discipleship ministries for children, youth, and adults in their churches. Over the past few weeks I have preached a message about the call to discipleship in each of the 3 Nazarene congregations in Romania. Luke 4, the passage from which the sermon is based, tells how Jesus calls ordinary fishermen to be his disciples after he does extraordinary things before them. My prayer is that the message will encourage those in our churches to expect great things from God and attempt great things for God (to borrow a phrase from William Carey).

I am working with the pastors of the churches on the district to discover the best ways to support them in developing discipleship ministries and provide training for lay leaders. Please be in prayer for the development of this much-needed ministry.

By the way, this sermon was the first time I have preached in Romanian. Up until now, I’ve always preached in English with someone translating into Romanian. Since I plan to be in Romania for a long time, I feel that it is important to learn the language as best I can and make the effort by preaching and teaching in Romanian. It will require extra practice at the beginning, but that’s how I will learn.
