Christian accountability is sharing, in confidence, one’s Christian journey in an atmosphere of trust. In an accountability setting, one answers for what one has done, sees areas in which one needs help, understands one’s struggles and weaknesses, and is supported and encouraged to stay on track.
The spiritual discipline of accountability is for all Christians and is most effective when a person voluntarily holds oneself accountable to God, family, and friends. Accountability will enhance one’s integrity, maturity, character, and growth in Christ.
Accountability can take place in many settings. Sometimes accountability takes place in a covenant group. Other times it is one way, as when a person is asked questions by a mentor. Still other times it is in an informal setting with one other person, in which both partners hold the other accountable.
It takes time to develop the level of trust required for accountability. Do not try to immediately dive into the deepest areas of your life or expect others to do the same. Begin by having close friends hold you accountable in areas such as praying regularly. As you build trust, you will be able to share more personal and private issues.
If you are just getting started and don’t know what questions to ask, or if you are already in an accountability relationship but want to grow deeper together, here are some questions for all areas of life which you can use to keep one another accountable. These are questions for Christians who desire to watch over each other in brotherly love, seeking to help one another live holy lives.
Click here for a list of accountability questions I have compiled from multiple sources. It is not intended that you ask every question. Rather, choose those questions which are appropriate for your situation. If you wish, you can ask different questions each time you meet.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17
