While I was home in Pennsylvania over the holidays, I
received a form in the mail from PennDOT, reminding me that it’s time to renew
my driver’s license. Since I’ve often written about how complicated it is to
renew my visa in Romania, I thought I’d write about how simple the driver’s license renewal
process in comparison.
After receiving the form from PennDOT, I went to the PennDOT
website where I quickly and easily renewed my driver’s license, paying the $30 fee.
On my last day in the US, the “camera card” came in the mail
that I had to take with me to the DMV to get my photo taken for my new driver’s
license. I had only a few hours before having to leave for the airport with
much still to be done at home, but I decided that I really should try to get my
driver’s license taken care of that day.
When I arrived at the DMV, I had to take a number. Press “A”
if you need just a photo taken. Press “B” for anything else. I pressed “A.” The
ticket was printed, complete with a note informing me that I’d have
approximately a 2-minute wait period. After 2 minutes, I was called to the
window. I verified my information, had my picture taken, then waited another 2
minutes until my driver’s license was ready. I was in and out in less than 10
minutes. Thank you, PennDOT. That was simple.
Then I got on a plane and returned to Romania.
