The following was published in York Daily Record & York Dispatch on December 31, 2012, and posted at legacy.com about my great-great uncle who was like a grandfather to me. I'm grateful to have been in the US over the holidays and that I can attend his funeral on Wednesday before returning to Romania.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth R. Gibson officiating. A visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Windsor Church of God Cemetery. A flag presentation ceremony will be provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
Born January 18, 1925 in Windsor, he was a son of the late Ivan C. and Flora (Oberdorff) Flinchbaugh. He was employed in the assembly department at Caterpillar for 17 years until his retirement in 1985. A United States Navy Veteran of World War II, he was a member of the USS Alabama Battleship Association. He was very involved with Pleasant View Brethren in Christ Church where he attended and enjoyed reading the Bible, which he referred to as the "instruction book of life". He also liked visiting flea markets and antiquing with his wife.
Mr. Flinchbaugh is survived by one daughter, Beverly A. Flinchbaugh of Red Lion and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Lonnie E. Flinchbaugh and six brothers and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant View Brethren in Christ Church, 434 E. Lancaster St., Red Lion, Pa 17356, or York Rescue Mission, 367 W. Market Street, York, Pa 17401.
