I just found an episode of "War Stories" which looks at Romania during World War II.
The two world wars greatly shaped Romania. Following the first world war, the kingdom of Romania entered into a new golden era; on the victors' side of the war, its expanded territory became known as "The Great Romania." As World War II approached, Romania was trapped between Nazi Germany to the west and the Soviet Union to the east. With which superpower would they become allies? With a struggle for power within the country, Romania's prime minister-become-dictator allied the country with the Nazis and forced the king to abdicate. Even though a new king rose to power and switched to the side of the Allies, Romania was considered a defeated country at the end of the war. As such, Romania lost much of the territory it had gained at the end of the first world war. As the Communists took control of Romania, the king was forced into exile.
This episode covers these fascinating developments of Romania's involvement in World War II, including an interview with King Michael of Romania, one of the few surviving monarchs reigning during World War II.
