On this day 25 years ago, as a 19-year-old college student, I stepped out of my comfort zone and onto a plane to Romania.

This morning, I spent some time looking through pictures from those 6 months. Then I read parts of my journal, the first few newsletters that I sent to family and friends, and the reflection paper I wrote at the end of those 6 months. (It’s fun to be reminded of phone cards and pay phones, instant messenger at the internet café, developing film, listening to CDs, and watching the movie they showed on the plane, not to mention life before cell phones, GPS, and Wi-Fi.)

This afternoon I decided to watch the video of my very first sermon, which I preached about a month before I left for Romania. It was a HUGE step of faith for me to go to Romania for 6 months when I was in college. Watching this now, I’m reminded how uncertain I felt back then about the future. But now I also look back with 25 years of experience, confident that God has been with me every step along the way.
